The 2019 L'Hetre, a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Cedar, baked plums, and redcurrant jelly notions jump from the nose with underlying hints of dried herbs, cedar, and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate is a little rugged and chewy, with just enough fruit and an oak-laced finish.

The 2019 L'Hêtre lacks a little cohesion on the nose, slightly minty black fruit laced with cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Maybe this suffers a little over-extraction, though I appreciate the spicy finish and peppery aftertaste. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
